Every five years, the Italian Government, drafts the Report on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, ratified by Law No. 176 of 1991, on the basis of a general scheme specifically prepared by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (General Guidelines for Periodic Reports - 2005). The Report is an instrument through which each State must provide information on the condition of children in the country and accounts for the Government’s actions adopted and enforced with the aim of fully implementing the Convention provisions.
The Report examines the main legislative, administrative and legal instruments through which our country applies the Convention and the related Optional Protocols, as well as the activities undertaken to provide information on and to disseminate the content of the Convention and the Protocols, as well as the various bilateral and multilateral international cooperation initiatives carried out by Italy in this context.
For the compilation of the consolidated report of the Italian Government, the National Centre works in collaboration with the Inter-ministerial Committee on Human Rights (CIDU) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), whose mandate is, inter alia, to prepare and submit to the United Nations the Government reports on the implementation of the main conventions on the protection of human rights in Italy.
The drafting of each Report is the result of the work of a special working group that coordinates the contributions of the different central and decentralized Administrations involved in this important monitoring and reporting exercise.
