Over 1,000 Children Die Every Day from Diseases Related to Unsafe Water and Inadequate Sanitation

On World Water Day, Unicef highlighted that every day, more than 1,000 children under the age of five lose their lives due to diseases linked to unsafe water and inadequate sanitation, contributing to a total of 1.4 million deaths annually.

Currently, four billion people - almost two thirds of the world's population - face severe water shortages for at least one month a year.

Some 436 million children live in areas of high or very high water vulnerability, characterised by water scarcity and inadequate water services. Climate change intensifies these problems, causing extreme weather events such as droughts and floods, which compromise water availability and quality, and affecting the most vulnerable children in particular.
