“2025 Global Outlook. Prospects for Children: Building Resilient Systems for Children's Futures”, the new Unicef report, is online. The publication assesses the risks that children may face in the New Year and suggests some strategies to limit potential damage.
“The world” - reads the Unicef website - “is facing a new and intensifying era of crisis for children. Many of these crises – including climate change, conflict and economic instability – are closely interconnected. They reflect a world of rising geopolitical tensions and competition among nations, which are hindering the implementation of solutions.”
Indebtedness is one of the five dimensions of the global crisis examined by the report.
The high cost of debt drastically reduces investments in essential sectors such as education, health and social protection, and it is children, more than anyone else, who pay the highest price.
A key proposal that Unicef is making to counter this problem is the Children's Debt Reset, which envisages the complete cancellation of debt to free up resources for essential services for the 400 million children living in countries facing debt crisis.
The Report is available on the Unicef website.
