Notebook 36 - Crèches and complementary early childhood education services

The volume gives an overview, as of 31 December 2005, of national and regional data and legislation concerning early childhood services in Italy.

The survey shows that there has been a considerable growth since 2000: the number of crèches has increased by 62% and the percentage of children who had access to a crèche has grown from 7.4% to 9.9%. However, there is no reduction in the gap existing between regions: on the contrary, the inequalities have become even bigger and children keep on having far fewer opportunities of access to the services in the most disadvantaged areas of the country.
The ratio is still 1 to 10 between children living in “fortunate” regions (such as Veneto, Emilia and Tuscany) and children living in areas where the number of services has not increased in recent years (Southern Italy, Sicily and Sardinia).
