In 2023 there were just over 2.2 million households in absolute poverty and almost 5.7 million individuals in the same condition. The data of the recent Report on the phenomenon prepared by the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat) show that absolute poverty will remain substantially stable compared to 2022. According to the document, the incidence of absolute poverty is 8.4% among households (8.3% in 2022) and 9.7% among individuals (as in the previous year).
The situation for the under-18s remains very critical, with more than 1.295 million children and adolescents belonging to families in absolute poverty (13.8%). Compared to 2022, the condition of minors is stable at national level, with the highest value since 2014, but there are signs of worsening for children aged 7 to 13 in the central Italy (the incidence reaches 13.9% from 10.7%).
Other data reveal that in 2023, families living in relative poverty numbered more than 2.8 million (10.6%, a stable figure compared to 2022), affecting a total of over 8.4 million individuals (14.5%, an increase from 14% the previous year).
