Knowledge of the world of childhood and adolescence is based on experiences, stories and numbers.

Awareness of the fact that the design and implementation of policies in favour of children and young people and their families, cannot disregard the prior collection of statistical data, capable of assessing the conditions of well-being and quality of life in the various territories, lies at the basis of the new information system that collects and makes accessible in an organised manner.

The Numbers of Childhood and Adolescence, a project carried out by the Istituto degli Innocenti in Florence as part of the activities of the National Documentation and Analysis Centre for Childhood and Adolescence, defined in agreement with the Department for Family Policies of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.

The data available through this system represent the largest reasoned selection of statistical indicators referring specifically to children and adolescents currently available in Italy.

These data are the result of second level processing of statistics produced by Istat, Eurostat, other national bodies or central and regional administrations. In some cases, it is also information that the Institute itself produces exclusively, such as on children outside the family in foster care.

The Statistical Information Database is composed of 10 domains (divided into 51 sub-domains and 547 indicators)

1.    Demographics
2.    Families
3.    Education
4.    Health
5.    Vulnerability
6.    Deviance, risks
7.    Economic issues
8.    Public expenditure
9.    Policies
10.  Services, interventions

Domains and subdomains deal with relevant aspects of children's and young people's well-being and quality of life by analysing data according to the most precise territorial breakdown available.
For each domain of relevance, an interactive dashboard is developed.
The user can select the domain of interest from the navigation tree, which is always available on the web page, and query each dashboard independently by setting filters (e.g. year and territorial level) and selecting the geographical areas represented on the map.
