“Così lontani, così vicini. Gli atteggiamenti di adolescenti e giovani nei confronti dei loro pari con background migratorio in Italia” (So Far, So Close. The Attitudes of Adolescents and Young People Towards Their Peers with a Migrant Background in Italy) is the title of the new report compiled by Lattanzio Kibs and Ipsos in collaboration with Unicef to investigate the attitudes of adolescents and young people aged 15 to 24 towards migration, discrimination and racism, with a focus on perceptions towards peers with a migrant background.

According to the publication, Generation Z appears to be more open to differences and more sensitive to social issues, although a proportion of the teenagers and young people interviewed express feelings of distance, isolation and not belonging.

85% of respondents state that they want to play their part in the world, but only 19% are actively engaged, while 29% feel excluded and do not recognise themselves in the community they live in. Moreover, 93% report having experienced or seen discriminatory acts. Among children with a migration background, experiences of discrimination have been linked to factors such as religion (36%), skin colour or ethnicity (17%) and migrant status (31%).
